Social media in recent years has become the place where disinformation spreads most rapidly. The social damage of that disinformation is a "side effect" of the commercial choices of those social media platforms and today's attention economy. In particular, the algorithms of social media platforms facilitate the rapid and wide spread of disinformation.

In addition, Flemish research brings worrying figures about disinformation. A recent VRT study - a November 2021 survey of over 2,000 Flemish people about awareness and attitudes toward disinformation - shows that young people have already felt the most victimized by disinformation. As many as 6 in 10 have already believed information that later turned out to be wrong.
Through a collaboration between fact checkers, with their network and knowledge about fighting disinformation, and digital content creators, with their network and knowledge about how to realize impact on social media, Counterscam creates new levers for greater resilience against disinformation and fake news.
In recent months, we have already organized several workshops for and by fact checkers and content creators working around the dangers of fake news and the importance of fact checking and how to make social media users more resilient to disinformation.
We also recently launched the first Counterscam Instagram post in collaboration with Jef Willems of Onbespreekbaar to counter myths around ADHD that are doing the rounds on TikTok.
