The goal
The podcast Voice Color is a collaboration between Relaas, Chase Creative and IN-Ghent. The latter organization implements the integration policy for the city of Ghent. Every day, many "new Gentenaars" visit IN-Ghent. There they register for Dutch or social orientation courses or get information about leisure activities and studying in Ghent.

In addition to their questions, many people also bring inspiring, funny and moving stories. IN-Ghent wanted to bring the stories of these newcomers to a wider audience and came up with the idea of creating a podcast. They wanted to focus on the dreams and ambitions of these newcomers rather than stories about fleeing their country or the racism they face. In this way, they wanted to harness the power of stories to connect people.
Our social story for the podcast Voice Color
For Voice Color, we recorded stories of new Ghent residents who deserve to be listened to. The newcomers were given carte blanche to fill their episode of the podcast with their own story and narrative voice. The result is a collection of small and big stories from newcomers, each with their own voice color in their new language, Dutch. For example, we have Camila bringing a story about her hair and the different social norms around it in her motherland Brazil and her new homeland Belgium.

Relaas volunteers coached the storytellers to develop their own storyline. They looked for small anecdotes in their life stories that also tell something about being a newcomer in Ghent. Chase Creative helped with strategy, recording and audio editing. Because the language was a big challenge, we made sure the people could tell their stories in a safe cocoon. We coached them a few times to bring their story, which allowed us to edit it into one fluent story. Thus, we helped people who were not yet completely familiar with the Dutch language to create a final story they could be proud of.

The result
The podcast Stemkleur was launched during a live event on March 8 at Herberg Macharius Ghent. The stories will be used in different contexts at other events, in the welcome package for new Gentenaars, in Dutch language classes and also new IN-Gent ambassadors will hear the stories. In this way, the podcast gives new Gentenaars insight into how other newcomers built a life in Ghent. IN-Ghent already does a lot of outreach and counseling, but these stories were a great addition to their services as they are inspiring and remembered.
